CBS Austin's Adela Uchida covers a rally protesting a Texas proposal that would require burial or cremation of fetal remains. As part of the rally, abortion-rights supporters delivered 5,600 public comments on the rule to Texas' Department of State Health Services.
Peggy Morton, a rally attendee, said, "I'm fed up with politicians interfering with the autonomy of a woman's body." Alexa Garcia-Ditta, a spokesperson for NARAL Pro-Choice Texas, echoed Morton's concerns, stating, "This is not about public health ... This is [a] continuation of the antiabortion attacks that we've been seeing here in Texas, especially after this summer's Supreme Court ruling that some of our restrictions are unconstitutional."
Advocates also are concerned about "the way the rule is being put into place," Uchida says, noting that the state is implementing the rules through the bureaucracy rather than via the state Legislature. Garcia-Ditta said, "We don't want to see these rules put in place at all. But ... if they're going to go through this process, it needs to be more transparent" (Uchida, CBS Austin, 10/26).
