In this infographic, the Texas Observer compiled information from the Texas Department of State Health Services, the Texas Policy Evaluation Project and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to provide a snapshot of abortion access in Texas.
While the Supreme Court in June struck down contested provisions in Texas' omnibus antiabortion-rights law (HB 2), the overturned restrictions have had a lasting effect on access to abortion care. More than 20 abortion clinics in the state have shut down since the law was enacted. Advocates report that some of those clinics will likely never reopen, while others will take some time.
According to the infographic, the law increased the amount of time women must wait for an appointment with an abortion provider, compelling some women to wait more than 20 days for care and likely contributing to an increase in the number of second-trimester abortions. The infographic also highlights how HB 2 had a disproportionate effect on abortion access for Latinas (Sadasivam, Texas Observer, 8/10).
