In this clip, NY 1's Natalie Duddridge covers Planned Parenthood's centennial celebration at New York City Hall.
Duddridge says the event "was held to commemorate the opening of the first-ever U.S. birth control clinic in Brooklyn in 1916 by Margaret Sanger." Alexander Sanger, the grandson of Margaret Sanger, praised her work, stating, "She saw women dying ... and she said, 'Enough. This has to stop.'"
Today, according to Duddridge, Planned Parenthood has 650 clinics open throughout the country. She adds that while Planned Parenthood celebrated its centennial to "recogniz[e] how far [it has] come," the organization will "continue to battle legally and politically" for reproductive rights in the face of continued attacks on abortion rights (Duddridge, NY 1, 10/17).
