In this infographic, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) outlines data showing that the percentage of Texas women opting for long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) through three state-operated health programs increased between 2012 and 2013. Despite the increase in the percentage of women obtaining LARC through the programs, HHSC also found that the overall number of women who got such contraceptives decreased in two of the programs. The decline follows state cuts to Planned Parenthood and family planning clinics.
HHSC found that between 2012 and 2015, the percentage of women obtaining LARC through the state's Family Planning Program increased from 5.1 to 13.3 percent; the percentage of women obtaining LARC through the Texas Women's Health Program increased from 6.9 to 10.8 percent; and the percentage of women obtaining LARC through the state's Medicaid program increased from 6.5 to 7.5 percent (Martin, San Antonio Express-News, 9/13).
