The Louisiana Senate on Tuesday voted 35-0 to give final approval to a bill (HB 488) that would impose new certification requirements for abortion providers, the AP/Sacramento Bee reports.
The bill now proceeds to Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) (AP/Sacramento Bee, 5/10).
Bill details
Under the bill -- sponsored by abortion-rights opponent, state Rep. Katrina Jackson (D) -- abortion providers would be required to be board certified or certifiable in either family medicine or OB-GYN. Medical students in OB-GYN or family medicine residency programs would be allowed to provide abortion care only under the "direct supervision" of a board-certified physician (Women's Health Policy Report, 4/7).
According to the AP/Bee, the bill is the first of several proposed abortion restrictions during Louisiana's legislative session to gain final passage (AP/Sacramento Bee, 5/10).
