KJRH's Brian Sanders discusses an Oklahoma bill (SB 1552) that "would prohibit any doctor who performs an abortion from obtaining or renewing [his or her] medical license, essentially eliminating legal abortions in the state."
The bill, sponsored by state Sen. Nathan Dahm (R), requires final approval from the state Senate before it can proceed to Gov. Mary Fallin (R). If signed into law, the measure would take effect Nov. 1.
According to Sanders, both opponents and supporters of the bill are preparing for a legal challenge should the measure become law. Violet Rush of the Oklahoma Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice denounced the bill, stating, "Individuals seeking abortion will have to go back underground and seek abortion care through unsafe and unprofessional means." She added, "Senator Dahm is wasting our time. This legislation is unconstitutional" (Sanders, KJRH, 4/26).
