Ryan Braschler of WEHT's "Eyewitness News" covers Indiana University's (IU) lawsuit against fetal tissue restrictions included in an Indiana antiabortion-rights law (HEA 1337). According to the "Eyewitness News" team, a federal judge recently issued a preliminary injunction in a separate lawsuit against the law's ban on abortion based on fetal disability diagnosis or sex.
According to Braschler, IU officials have explained that it is "common practice across the country to use fetal tissue in research and it could potentially help millions of people." Citing IU officials, Braschler notes the law could drive researchers away from the university, which school officials say could cost the state and university several million dollars.
Mark Land, associate vice president of public affairs for IU, says the law "puts us behind in our efforts to stay at the forefront of research into diseases like Alzheimer's that affect millions of people and cost the American health system billions of dollars a year" (Braschler, Eyewitness News, WEHT, 6/30).
